Isn’t it weird that the only challenge we have now is NOT to eat (in excess) ! Комментарий от : genesis1 |
Scarcity wasn't the problem. Systemic abuse of power hurt the peasants. I can't imagine one family owning the entire forest and all fishing waters, so that hunting or fishing was stealing. Комментарий от : GaslitWorld f. Melissa B |
I hunt and most of the time I kill an animal I eat the parts that go bad fast most of the time I eat the back strap first and the rest gets grounded in to Burger or made in to jerky Комментарий от : Zachary Burgard |
Bread in the middle ages was a cause of diabetes. Especially white bread since there was little to no nutrition in it. Upper class food was more unhealthy according to research. The peasant food had lots of calories but much healthier. Комментарий от : Max Kim Lowe |
No stone castles in 1400s. Is that what they said. They said at the beginning it was1420 I believe. And when the lower folk was outside cooking they said they was no stone castles? That is utterly untrue. Ok I misheard that. They went back even further in time. That is still not entirely true. France had started making stone castles and later did the English after Norman conquest in the 11th century. Комментарий от : templar order |

The moment I heard then saying Middle Ages invented masonry and claiming Europeans invented algebra I knew it was total crab... two egregiously wrong claims in the starting minute of the documentary tells you something about its informative quality : horrible. Комментарий от : Moh O |

Yes, because if lemons are known for any one thing in the medieval period it's being curator gardened or traded and transported thousands of miles for their 'mild sweetness'. Комментарий от : canid song |

India is the land of spices. Oh my beautiful country and her spices. 🥺❤️ Комментарий от : Mouli |
Some of the things this documentary is saying just are not true. For example when you say fresh water fish like salmon was only for the rich is not accurate. In fact peasants ate a lot of fresh salmon because of the obedience I mean salmon is everywhere and fishers would fish it of course. But it wasn't something for the rich as peasants where able to catch their own fish as well without it costing them a dime. I learned this from a true historian on medieval food and such so. Even the Timeline believes in myth of "40 years lifespan". That "span" was mostly the result of newborns deaths. It should say "life expectancy at birth" (10 kids born, 5 survives till 80 and 5 dies would give us average of 40. Average). Комментарий от : Tee Key |

Even though Butter was discovered in India over 3000 years ago....It was not used in France and Southern Europe. It was not really introduced in into Southern Europe until the 12 th century....introduced by the barbarians from the north which they called the "butter eaters" Комментарий от : Raylene Abbott |
19:35 that is not true there has been butter for as long as there has been cheese there have been butter found in peat bogs in Ireland that predates the roman invasion of Europe ie www.butterjournal.com/butter-history/ say butter is at lest there thousand years and the actor wearing glasses wouldn't be possible glasses were invented by George Biddle Airy

I think the peasants got the better choice of wine given that it was pressed and not crushed by foot I would hate to drink anything that I had crushed with my own feet let alone having been exposed to being crushed by the feet of some one who may only bath once or twice a year! Butter is derived from the Ancient Greek “boutyron” — literally, “bovine (cow’s) cheese”; it was certainly widely available in the Classical world, and there is good evidence to suppose that it was introduced at least as far back as the Old Kingdom of Egypt, perhaps even earlier (before the middle of the fourth millennium BCE) in Mesopotamia, and farther afield in the Indus Valley civilizations centred at Harappa and Mohenjo Daro. Keep in mind that these dates are only indicative of the earliest records we have for the preparation of dairy products akin to butter. In my estimation, it is very plausible that butter had already been known for millennia before that among nomadic pastoralists and cattle-herders. Комментарий от : Dorian Philotheates |
18:55-19:00 — Most of the higher clergy, then as now, hardly ever abstained let alone fasted...the strict application of such quaint practices were meant for the sheep — not the pastors. Throughout the Middle Ages, monastics and bishops, in particular, were renowned for their rotundness... Комментарий от : Dorian Philotheates |

It's not just the error about butter. The idea that a chef would be a "squire" must be a mis-translation. The man they refer to, Guillaume Tirel (nicknamed Taillevent), was "maitre queux" not "l' equyer". Another mistake is when talking about sorrel juice, the plants shown are not sorrel. They're carrot, coriander, cumin, or some other umbellifers. Yikes. Another Timeline failure. Комментарий от : Lisa Kilmer |

Remember all, that the "40 years on average" takes into account the high mortality of children. So with an "average life span of 40 years" and a mortality of say 1 in 3 not reaching adulthood, many people likely lived to 70 or so. Комментарий от : illanna christanos |

There were no spray chemicals to keep the worms and insects away I guess so they had to eat the worms. Talking about it, they may have boiled the water to kill the worms if I'm right. But I hear that people live much longer today than before. The oldest I heard was 120 years and that's not bad and I say that many do not live that long. I have heard of a gentleman over 80 not long ago who works out at the gym like as if he was in his mid 20's; and I have heard someone sharing with everyone about a farmer who over 90 worked as a farmer as if he was as fit as a fiddle. If that's true then we can grow our own fruit and vegetables and when they are ripe for picking for sanitation we can boil them to kill the worms, if so that's a saving for chemical spray. Is this gonna make me a genius, no way! Комментарий от : anthony butto |

I like the way they're making everything so slowly and carefully in this documentary. In a real medieval kitchen they'd probably be running around like chickens with their heads off. That being said, this was very interesting. Комментарий от : Jean Ely |

Actually in most areas durring most of the midieval times fish were a staple of peasant diet. Peasants would often dry and cure the fish and in some areas it was actually referred to as peasant food. Peasants were also allowed to hunt for food. However deer were more common among knights and nobility because of hunting regulations and the fact that you needed better equipment to hunt them. Комментарий от : Terezi Pyrope |
Complaint 1) This is clearly set in a time and place but that information is not specified. It's important, though, because what is possible in one time and place may not be possible in another. Laws differ, options differ. Complaint 2) The business about the poor not eating much fish is nonsensical for large parts of Europe, including Britain. Partly, this is because the category "the poor" is very broad and this video seemed to be referring to anyone who wasn't a noble. In fact, it was possible to not be a noble and to be relatively well-off (or even actually wealthy). But, also, we know that, although it may have been challenging to get fresh fish in many areas, salted fish was common. I didn't even bother getting to the butter thing commented on by so many. If a documentary gets basic things wrong, I cannot trust it about the rest and usually give up on it altogether. Комментарий от : Sappho Culloden |

It was not true, that peasants couldn't fish in the rivers. Most peasants built their homes near water sources like rivers for easy access to water. And they did indeed eat a lot of fish. In fact it was irony, that the wealthy eating their white bread and loads of meat and wine often suffered poor health and gout. Compared to the peasants who ate a lot of dark bread, which was more nutritious as well as a great deal of fish, they avoided the "rich man's diseases" as gout, obesity and other similar illnesses were often referred to. I'm not watching this because it's an education mukbang... I'm NoT. Комментарий от : Stitchpuppy01 |
Salmon was more of a peasants food in britain, along with what we would call wholemeal bread. Where as chicken and a more refined white bread was common for knights and people of nobility as those foods were seen as higher class. The poor could not afford to eat something so valuable for their day to day needs (eggs from their chickens) so salmon was actually more common for british peasants in the middle ages. 30:20 in the Middle Ages, they boiled mostly everything including fruits vegetables and anything that was consumed that wasn't already dried or salted. It took me about 15 seconds to find several websites on the History of Butter, confirming that this documentary's claim that 'butter had yet to be invented' is absolute nonsense. I've also been involved with a company of re-enactors who specialise in the 15th century who are fanatical about accuracy and they use butter all the time! Комментарий от : Yvonne Mason |

By the way. They wouldnt put spices on their food like that. The pinky finger was kept clean all the time. Those people have bad manners at the table.
